“Coaching” means different things to different people—and is especially vague when applied to the dynamics of diversity, equity, and inclusion in leadership. Executive coaching, in the traditional sense, often falls short of its aim because it’s almost always internally oriented and doesn’t address systemic bias and inequities coded into our institutions. Additionally, the material realities of being a person of color or immigrant, a “first” and/or “only,” it can often be overlooked and discounted when analyzed through “normal” leadership development frameworks. Social analysis falls short because it doesn’t grapple with the leader’s unique interior landscapes and so it rarely creates personal and lasting change.
